About this course

In this course we will develop and practise the writing skills you need to write a short 5-10 minute radio play: how to devise a plot that works for sound, building a three-act structure and  creating distinctive characters and their dialogue. It is helpful, but not necessary if you have done some creative writing before.

  • How a radio play is presented professionally  
  • How to create a plot that works for radio 
  • Telling a story in three acts 
  • Why distinctive characters are vital in a radio play 
  • How to create authentic characters 
  • Writing convincing dialogue 

What will learners achieve by the end of the course? 

  • You will understand the key elements in a successful radio play 
  • You will know how to present your work professionally 
  • You will know how to tackle writing a short play 
  • You will be able to give and receive feedback on others’ and your own work   
  • You will have more confidence in your creative writing        

What skills or knowledge do learners already need to have to attend the course? 


Literacy skills. It will be useful but not necessary to have done some creative writing before.   


Resources required:


Pen and paper – preferably an A4 notebook 


As this course is online, a suitable device such as laptop, smart phone, tablet or computer will be required to access the course.  Zoom will be used for the live sessions and the link will be sent to you once your enrolment has been completed.

To book and enrol on one of our courses, you must have been living in England and have been resident in the UK for the past 3 years.

Some exceptions may apply if you are living in England with evidence of the right to remain and are from an EEU/EEAU country (completion of a questionnaire will be required).

As we no longer receive funding for our ESFA-funded courses for learners living in the devolved areas listed below, full cost fees would apply to these courses if you live in these areas:
