Crochet Granny Squares - Mansfield Woodhouse Library - Adult Learning

This practical course teaches you how to design unique handmade projects by mastering traditional and advanced Granny Squares. You will start by exploring the rich history behind the naming of Granny Squares before moving quickly into hands-on crafting with various yarns and wools. The course guides you from the absolute basics up to intricate antique vintage squares, while expanding your geometric skills to create oblongs, circles, spirals, and swirls. Finally, you will learn to navigate any international pattern with total confidence by mastering the precise differences between UK and US terminology alongside metric hook size conversions.

You will learn essential crochet skills and build confidence through hands-on practice. The course then focuses on creating a range of Granny Square styles, including basic, vintage, oblong, circular, swirl, and spiral designs.

You will also learn how to combine different squares to create more interesting projects, as well as how to convert between metric, US, and UK hook sizes and stitch terms.

By the end of the course learners will be able to:-

• Understand the origin and background of traditional crochet

• Crochet 3 classic granny squares using a simple pattern

• Complete 1 distinct shape for every new stitch you learn

• Stitch your completed granny squares together to create a full blanket

• Master the techniques needed to create intricate, antique-style granny squares

• Convert the different terminology used for English and American Crochet stitches and the Crochet Hook Size Conversion for Metric, US & UK.

What you need to bring to the course:

A drink – water or juice, notebook and pen, and a hook size 4/4.5/or 5 and yarn/wool

Residency Requirements (Additional Information)

If you live in the UK on a visa, we’ll need evidence of your visa to confirm funding. You can upload this when applying, and you’ll need to complete a short questionnaire.

Some exceptions include:

• Your visa must last until after your course ends.

• Asylum seekers must have lived in the UK for at least 6 months while their claim is being processed.

• You are supported by your local authority under Section 23C or 23CA of the Children Act 1989, or under the Care Act 2014.

Anyone who does not meet the funding criteria would need to pay full course fees.
