About this course

About this course

Do you care for a loved one living with dementia? Are you professional carer or a volunteer at a Memory Café or Singing for the Brain group? Maybe you would just like to know more about dementia. This interactive, introductory course offers information about what dementia is and how we can support people who live with it to continue to live a fulfilling life.

What will be covered on the course?  What will be taught to learners?

  • What is dementia? identify the main types of dementia and their symptoms
  • Models of dementia: understand different ways in which dementia is defined and how these impact on care and support.
  • Obtaining a diagnosis: how to access a diagnosis and the benefits of doing so
  • Person-centred support: discover values and effective methods which can support a person living with dementia

What will learners achieve by the end of the course

By the end of the course, learners will have achieved:

A basic understanding of causes and symptoms of the main types of dementia; an appreciation that there are different ways of defining and describing dementia; knowledge about accessing a diagnosis: what to expect and the benefits of obtaining this; theoretical and practical awareness of person centred interventions and their benefits

This course offers a basic introduction which can lead to progression to accredited learning on a CACHE Level 2 award in Dementia Awareness which will offer a deeper and broader learning experience on this subject

What skills or knowledge do learners already need to have to attend the course?

This is a short, introductory course for people with little or no knowledge of dementia or the support available. It is very suitable for carers or relatives of family members with dementia seeking guidance on what dementia is, its impact, and sources of support; or for workers who do not specialise in dementia but come into contact through their work with people living with dementia, who would like more knowledge and understanding of how to help
