About this course

Do you live with dyslexia or have a relative who does? Do you experience barriers to learning and work which could be related to living with dyslexia? Are you a manager who wants to support staff members with dyslexia? The aim of this course is to offer basic information and insights into what dyslexia is, how it impacts on people’s lives, learning and work (positively and negatively); human support, adaptations and technology which can assist people living with dyslexia 

What will be covered on the course?  

• What is dyslexia? Learners will gain awareness of the multi-sensory impact of dyslexia 
• Models of dyslexia: learners will be able to understand different ways in which dyslexia is defined and how these impact on people’s self esteem 
• Barriers to learning and work for people living with dyslexia: learners will explore how reliance on print in work and education disadvantages people living with dyslexia, and how reasonable adjustments can be made to accommodate different learning and communication styles 
• Strengths of dyslexia: learners will reflect on the positive aspects of living with dyslexia 
• Assistive technology and human support: learners will gain insight into the benefits of mentoring and other forms of human support, and the value of assistive technologies 

What will learners achieve by the end of the course?  

• Evaluate the incidence of dyslexia in the UK using statistics 
• Identify types and signs of dyslexia 
• Explain how dyslexia affects people who live with it 
• Discuss different models of dyslexia and how the ways in which dyslexia is understood affect people who live with it 
• Reflect on the strengths of living with dyslexia 
• Know where and how to access further support and assistive technologies 

What skills or knowledge do learners already need to have to attend the course? 

• This is a short, introductory course for people with little or no knowledge of dyslexia or the support available. It is very suitable for parents of children with dyslexia seeking guidance on what dyslexia is, its impact, and sources of support, or for adults who think they might have dyslexia but need more knowledge and insight about it and about how to access assessment and support. 

You will need:

• Note-taking materials -either pen and notepad, voice recorder (learners are very welcome to record oral teaching as a reasonable adjustment but will be asked not to record personal disclosures) 
• Learners will be sent PowerPoint presentations and supplementary handouts. 
• This course is based on interactive teaching and learning. Learners are asked to be prepared to participate in quizzes, question and answer, discussions based on personal experience, and case study discussion

As this course is online, a suitable device such as laptop, smart phone, tablet or computer will be required to access the course.  Zoom will be used for the live sessions and the link will be sent to you once your enrolment has been completed.

To book and enrol on one of our courses, you must have been living in England and have been resident in the UK for the past 3 years.

Some exceptions may apply if you are living in England with evidence of the right to remain and are from an EEU/EEAU country (completion of a questionnaire will be required).
