About this course

This course is for parents/carers and their children who are Early Years (ages 3-5). If you have younger siblings I can also adapt for sensory play so both children can take part. 

This practical course will give ideas about how to support your child with literacy and numeracy.  

Activities will cover a wide range of topics from science, literacy, art and numeracy. 

All sessions are mapped to the Early Learning Goals (Early Adopter Framework).  

There are breaks throughout the session and a chance for adults to ask questions about supporting their child’s development

The course uses a story as a basis for a series of Zoom lessons.  

The Very Hungry Caterpillar – will cover: 

• Understanding the World – Facts about the caterpillar lifecycle, healthy eating 
• Mathematics – days of the week, help develop your child’s numeracy skills (Roll and Count Game, counting bugs, sequencing worksheets) 
• Literacy – Story Map, Sequencing, Writing Frames, work together to develop pencil control skills (e.g. mark making, letter formation, writing, drawing, colouring) 
• Physical Development – using movement/dance to tell the story 
• Science - chromatography 
• Communication and Language – Role Play, sensory story 
• Personal, Social and Emotional Development – Circle Time,  What will learners achieve by the end of the course? 
• A range of strategies and activities for supporting their child/ren with fun and interactive learning.  

You will need: Pencils, colouring pencils, recycled boxes, paper; everyday items. The tutor will let you know what you need week by week giving families seven days to get together their resources. All resources will be items that are in the home – no special purchases are needed. You will need to take photographs of the finished work (not the child) as evidence of learning and send to the tutor who will then map the learning to the Early Learning Goals 

This is an online course. A suitable electronic device such as a laptop, tablet or smartphone with internet access will be required. Learners will be required to download and use Zoom (free software).

To book and enrol on one of our courses, you must have been a resident in the UK for the past 3 years.

Some exceptions may apply if you are living in the UK with evidence of the right to remain and are from an EEU/EEAU country (completion of a questionnaire will be required).

As we no longer receive funding for our ESFA-funded courses for learners living in the devolved areas listed below, full cost fees would apply to these courses if you live in these areas:
