About this course

About this course

This is a course suitable for adults. The aim will be to achieve the City and Guilds 3748 (Legacy) Function Skills ICT Level 2 qualification.

The course will cover advanced skills in:

  • Word processing (MS Word)
  • Spreadsheets (MS Excel)
  • Presentations (MS PowerPoint)
  • Handling data (MS Access)
  • Using online resources (email and Internet).

What will learners achieve by the end of the course?

  • Learners will have the skills to take the online assessment and gain the accredited level 2 qualification.

What skills or knowledge do learners already need to have to attend the course?

  • Learners should have already gained the C&G Functional Skills ICT level 1 qualification and have a strong working knowledge of Microsoft Windows 10 (or similar operating system). Learners should be familiar with the keyboard layout and be able to type accurately.  This is a Level 2 accredited course and is not suitable for beginners.

The course will focus on advanced skills using the Microsoft Office suite of programs. Existing level 1 skills are essential.

The course will be delivered using Zoom: learners will watch ‘Walkthrough’ demonstrations by the tutor and then attempt tasks set in course materials. Learners will have opportunities, through the Zoom meetings, to get support and discuss any issues with their tutor.

Written course materials will be distributed as PDF files through the Zoom chat function where possible. Links to an online resource bank (handouts and ‘How-To’ videos) will be available to learners through file-sharing services.

Learners will need access to a laptop or desktop computer with at least a microphone (headset or built-in). A webcam is preferable. The computer used for the coursework must be the same device running the Zoom meeting, as the tutor will use screen sharing to guide and assess learners.

NB: Android and Apple smartphones and tablets are not suitable; mobile versions of Microsoft apps do not have all the required functions.

The course materials have been designed around Microsoft Windows 10, Google Chrome and Microsoft Office 365, although other web browsers and earlier versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access should be fine.

N.B. There is a significant amount of work around databases. Learners will need a working copy of Microsoft Access or equivalent database software.

As this course is online, a suitable device such as laptop, smart phone, tablet or computer will be required to access the course.  Zoom will be used for the live sessions and the link will be sent to you once your enrolment has been completed.
