About this course

Whether you want to feel more confident with numbers, support your children with schoolwork, or take a step towards a new qualification, our courses help you build practical math's skills in a supportive environment.

You'll work online, at times to suit you, towards a recognized qualification with support from expert tutors who understand adult learners and make maths feel approachable.

Instead of abstract ideas, the maths you do here is based on real, everyday situations (like managing money or measuring spaces). It is split into three main areas:

• Everyday Numbers: Getting confident with standard calculations, handling decimals, working out percentages, and dealing with fractions and ratios (great for budgeting or shopping).

• Shapes and Measuring: Working with lengths and weights, calculating the area of a space or the volume of a container, reading basic design plans, and using map scales or coordinates.

• Data and Odds: Figuring out averages, understanding basic probability (the likelihood of something happening), and learning how to read or draw charts and graphs.

You will also be taught exam techniques to help you achieve your qualification from City & Guilds.

You will need to access online resources for at least 2 hours per week, so an internet enabled device is needed; we can provide this in certain circumstances. It is useful to have a calculator (not on a phone), a pen, and a notepad. A textbook appropriate to your level will be provided to you on completion of your online initial assessment.

You will need to travel to a Nottinghamshire Library to sit your mock exam and your final exam.

Living in England

To book and join one of our courses, you must live in England permanently and either:

• Live inside the East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA) area (Nottinghamshire or Derbyshire)

or

• Live outside the devolved areas listed below

You cannot enrol if you live in these devolved areas:

• Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA)

• Liverpool City Region Combined Authority

• Greater London Authority

• North East Combined Authority

• South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority

• Tees Valley Combined Authority

• West Midlands Combined Authority

• West of England Combined Authority

• West Yorkshire Combined Authority

• Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority

• York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority

• Hull and East Yorkshire

• Greater Lincolnshire

• Devon and Torbay Combined County Authority

Residency Requirements (Additional Information)

If you live in the UK on a visa, we’ll need evidence of your visa to confirm funding. You can upload this when applying, and you’ll need to complete a short questionnaire.

Some exceptions include:

• Your visa must last until after your course ends.

• Asylum seekers must have lived in the UK for at least 6 months while their claim is being processed.

• You are supported by your local authority under Section 23C or 23CA of the Children Act 1989, or under the Care Act 2014.

Anyone who does not meet the funding criteria would need to pay full course fees.
