About this course

Japanese patchwork needle cases are beautiful things to use and to give as gifts, and in this class, we'll hand-sew one using cotton fabric. This is a lovely project to make, and the way that the needle case is constructed gives new ideas of how fabric can be shaped.

No previous experience necessary. Experienced and non-experienced hand-sewers are welcome. For those who haven't done much hand-sewing before, we'll cover some basics which will be useful for all future sewing.

At the end of this short course, you will:

have hand-sewn their own needle case
have gained confidence in sewing by hand
will have the pattern with which to make another needle case after the class

This course is programmed as part of the Miner2Major Landscape Partnership scheme, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Please bring:

a piece of cotton fabric approximately 25cm x 50cm
another piece of cotton fabric approximately 25cm x 50cm, in a colour or pattern that looks nice with the first piece.
scissors, pins and a needle (your usual basic sewing kit)
thread to match the fabric that you've brought
reading glasses if you need them
a pencil

Guidelines for the type of cotton to bring:

the type of cotton sold for patchwork works the best, e.g. cotton rather than polycotton. This is sometimes sold in 'fat quarters' which are a good size and will give you a choice of complimentary colours.
if you're going to use patterned fabric, try to choose a pattern that's small, and that can be seen any way up (rather than large patterns that have to be seen a certain way).

If you'd like to bring more than one set of fabric, that's fine. If you finish early you can start working on a second needlecase!
