About this course

This course expands on the basic skills of knitting and introduces more advanced stitches. It introduces how to cable and create lace patterns, how to change colours, knit using smaller needles and circular needles. Learners will be able to use these skills to create projects to enhance their home.

What will be covered on the course?  

• Learners will learn to read more complex knitting patterns and charts, as well as become comfortable changing colours of wool, cabling and creating a lace pattern, using holes. They will learn how to combine different stitches to create other types of stitch and how to pick up and knit stitches for edging and other parts of garments.  
• Learners will be able to begin a more advanced knitting project in the first session. They can choose the one they want to work on or choose from a selection provided by the tutor. They will be supported through the process by learning how to read more complex patterns and follow a stitch chart.  

What will learners achieve by the end of the course?  

• The course lasts for 6 weeks and has the following outcomes: 
• Explore more advanced projects and learn how to read more advanced knitting patterns and charts. 
• Learn how to change colours in tarsia projects, how to create a lace pattern and how to create cables in knitting. 
• Support learners if they have to deal with mistakes.  
• Begin a new advanced project, including one of these skills. 
• Progress further to other advanced projects, that will allow learners to continue independently after the course is finished.  

 What skills or knowledge do learners already need to have to attend the course? 

• Learners will need to be familiar with the basic stitches used in knitting, which are casting off and on, garter stitch, stocking stitch and how to increase and decease. They will also need to be familiar with reading basic knitting patterns.  

What resources/course materials do learners need to bring for the course? 

Learners will need:  

• A set of knitting needles, depending on what is needed for their pattern. I do not recommend very small or very large needles. Best sizes are: 3.75 mm, 4 mm, 4.5 mm, 5 mm / UK sizes 5, 6, 7, 8.  
• 'Double Knitting' yarn for their knitting pattern. 
• A knitting pattern they would like to work on. 
• Also useful, but not essential are scissors and a darning needle 
• Both knitting yarn and needles can usually be purchased from most good yarn shops. Many all-rounder shops, such as ‘Wilkinsons’ may also sell yarn and knitting needles. Knitting yarn and equipment can also be purchased online at: www.lovecrafts.com or at www.yarnwarehouse.co.uk.

To book and enrol on one of our courses, you must have been living in England and have been resident in the UK for the past 3 years.

Some exceptions may apply if you are living in England with evidence of the right to remain and are from an EEU/EEAU country (completion of a questionnaire will be required).
