About this course

The aim of this course is to offer basic information and insights into types of mental ill health and distress, symptoms and causes. We shall consider how poor mental health impacts on people’s lives; and we shall explore types and sources of support to improve wellbeing.

This is a short, introductory course for people with little or no knowledge of mental illnesses or the support available. It is very suitable for carers or relatives of family members living with mental health difficulties, seeking guidance on what mental ill health is, its impact, and sources of support; or for workers who do not specialise in mental illness but come into contact through their work with people living with mental illness, who would like more knowledge and understanding of how to help. It is also suitable for people living with mental ill health who would like to know more about it.

You will need: Note-taking materials -either pen and notepad, voice recorder (learners are very welcome to record oral teaching as a reasonable adjustment but will be asked not to record personal disclosures)

Learners will be sent  PowerPoint presentations and supplementary handouts.

This course is based on interactive teaching and learning. Learners are asked to be prepared to participate in quizzes, question and answer, discussions based on personal experience, and case study discussion

However, please be aware that this is not a therapy group. Anyone seeking therapeutic help for a mental illness is encouraged to visit the Mind website at www.mind.org.uk or seek an appointment with their GP or key worker. The Samaritans offer support for people who are feeling suicidal https://www.samaritans.org/ If you are at immediate risk of death by suicide please seek immediate medical help at a hospital A and E department or by calling 999
