The Multi-plate Collagraphs and Stencil printing course is an ideal introduction for anyone wanting to explore this versatile printmaking technique on its own or in combination with stencil (template) printing. Collagraph printing is an Intaglio printing process (where the ink is applied to the plate, rubbed in and gently wiped back to reveal the image, then printed). Stencil (template) printing is a relief printing process where a stencil (template) is rolled with ink and then printed (in this case on top of the collagraph). Making and printing collagraphs will give you the opportunity to explore texture and surface and combining plates and the stencil will enable you to build up layers of imagery.
Some experience of printmaking would be useful, but not necessary as tuition will be aimed at your own starting point.
During the course you will make a range of your own collagraph plates using mountboard, and experimenting with using textured papers and scribed marks to create an image from visual source materials. You will then use your different plates to layer up your image as well as printing back into your image with your stencil plates.
You will learn and explore these processes through looking at and discussing other printmakers’ work and by demonstrations, personal experimentation and individual tuition on how to make and print your collagraph and stencil plates.
By the end of the course everyone will have produced good quality, finished prints to mount and exhibit, sell or to give as gifts.
What will learners achieve by the end of the course?
You will be able to:
Discuss how other printmakers have explored multi-block collagraph and stencil printing processes.
Use visual source material to create ideas and imagery for collagraphs and stencil plates.
Use textured papers and thread and scribed (scratched) lines to create a collagraph plate.
Mix and use water soluble etching inks to print collagraph and stencil plates effectively and safely onto paper.
Produce effective finished layered prints.
