About this course

About this course

The aim of the course is to introduce important questions about murder in the UK (and globally) from a criminology perspective.

It includes some history, some psychology, some sociology.

The course will be interesting and fun with no unpleasant or directly violent content.

What will be covered on the course?

  • Who kills who, how, when and where?
  • What drives people to murder? Is it in all of us to kill or is there a definite ‘them’ and ‘us’?
  • How close to real murder is murder fiction and true crime in the media?
  • Is there such a thing as the perfect murder?
  • How should murderers be punished? Have we got it right at the moment?
  • Can we do more to address or even predict murder in the UK?
  • How does murder in Britain compare to the rest of the world?
  • Why is murder closely linked to inequality?

These and other questions will be discussed in this course. Good natured differences of opinion are welcome!

  • Learners will be able to assess society’s main issues regarding murder in the UK and the rest of the world.
  • Learners will be able to evaluate how well society addresses the crime of murder.
  • Learners will be able to offer ideas and possible solutions to various concerns regarding murder in the UK.
