About this course

This course is designed for adults who want to learn the basics of photo and image editing using GIMP, a free and powerful image editing programme. It provides clear, practical guidance in a supportive environment, helping you build confidence in improving, creating, and managing digital images.

You will learn how to edit photographs, enhance image quality, crop and resize pictures, and work with text and simple graphic elements. The course will also introduce key image editing concepts such as layers, colour correction, retouching, and saving images in different formats for printing, sharing, or online use.

Sessions are delivered at a steady pace with step-by-step explanations and opportunities to practise. You will work on a range of projects and learn techniques that can be applied to personal, creative, or everyday digital tasks.

By the end of the course, you will be able to make basic improvements to photographs and images and feel more confident using GIMP to create and edit digital content.


Learning outcomes:
• Use the main tools and features within GIMP to edit images

• Crop, resize, and improve the quality of photographs

• Work with layers, text, and simple graphic elements

• Save and export images in appropriate formats for different purposes

Entry requirements:
You should have basic computer skills, such as using a mouse and keyboard and managing files and folders. This course is suitable for learners with some basic prior experience.

What to bring:
You may wish to bring a notebook and pen to take notes. This is an online course, so you will need a laptop or PC with access to the internet and be able to use Teams.

You cannot enrol if you live in these devolved areas:

Residency Requirements (Additional Information)

If you live in the UK on a visa, we’ll need evidence of your visa to confirm funding. You can upload this when applying, and you’ll need to complete a short questionnaire.

Some exceptions include:

  • Your visa must last until after your course ends.

  • Asylum seekers must have lived in the UK for at least 6 months while their claim is being processed.

  • You are supported by your local authority under Section 23C or 23CA of the Children Act 1989, or under the Care Act 2014.

Anyone who does not meet the funding criteria would need to pay full course fees.
