About this course

This course will focus on the reading and enjoyment of poetry inspired by nature, exploring different poetic forms such as sonnets and ballads and reading nature poetry from different cultures, traditions and times. We will dig deep into the relationship between nature and poetry and consider the inspirational  power of nature as both a reoccurring theme and muse.

No Prior learning in this subject is required.

By the end of this course, you will have a deeper understanding of the relationship between nature and poetry.  This will be achieved by looking at the following during our sessions:

  • Reading poetry inspired by nature and analyzing it using a simple framework
  • Understanding different poetic forms such as lyrics, sonnets and ballads
  • Identifying poetic devices and the symbolism of nature in poetry
  • A study of Robert Millhouse: his poetry and love of Nottinghamshire landscape including Sherwood Forest
  • Exploring the relationship between poetry and nature
  • Speaking and listening: sharing ideas and group discussion

Resources required:

  • A simple notebook and pen

Suggested Reading - Any anthology of poems about nature.

This course is programmed as part of the Miner2Major Landscape Partnership scheme, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

To book and enrol on one of our courses, you must have been living in England and have been resident in the UK for the past 3 years.
