About this course

This course shows you how working quickly and pushing false colours can add impact to a portrait. We will try and emulate some of the portrait techniques of Hashim Akib. You will be taught the spontaneity of mark making and an instinctive approach to colour and tone to achieve an expressive portraiture painting in acrylic. The course is suitable for improvers.

You will be guided step-by-step to build your skills and confidence, focusing on subjects like composition and mark-making using rhythm, repetition and intuition: - Selecting appropriate photo references

Analysing examples of portraiture painting in the work of different artists
Transfer a portrait drawing onto the canvas
Using different tools to create mark-making
Apply the paint by different tools in the expressionist style
Varnishing

Resources required for this course:

Acrylic paper/sketch pad, 30 x 40cm canvases, gesso, a range of synthetic paint brushes, graphite pencils, pastels baby wipes, cotton rags, photo reference
