About this course

This course is for anyone with an interest in prehistory, and in the things that our prehistoric ancestors made. The sessions will provide a unique opportunity to explore and learn about our ancient past and also experience some of the crafts and technologies used during those times. The course will be a balanced combination of learning and hands-on making,

Suitable for all levels of ability; an interest in prehistory and a willingness to learn new skills

We start the course by looking at the established timeline of prehistory, becoming familiar with the named time periods of prehistory and how they fit in to this timeline.

We will then look at each time period individually, and make, create or reproduce something that typifies that time period. For example, when we look at the Palaeolithic, we'll do some cave painting. We will also handle materials, tools and replicas relevant to the time periods we're studying.

By the end of this course you will gain:

• An understanding of the timeline of prehistory, and how lifestyles, activities and technologies changed over the named time periods (e.g. the Mesolithic, the Bronze Age)

• Hands-on experience of making things from each time period.

• Familiarity with tools and materials from different time periods

• Confidence in thinking about the crafts and technologies of prehistory, and how they relate to our lives today.

You may wish to bring an apron for some of the craft activities - we will discuss this in the first session.
