About this course

The M2M scheme aims to reconnect local people to Sherwood Forest’s sense of place, varied landscapes and cultural heritage. On this course, you will be taught how to paint Sherwood's landscape. You will complete several compositions using water-based paint. Working from photographs, tuition is provided through a mixture of demonstrations and exercises according to your needs, as well as informal group critiques and discussions, all helping to increase your knowledge and enjoyment of landscape drawing. The course is suitable for beginners.

By the end of the course you will complete at least one painting on canvas. You will become more confident in landscape drawing, depicting depth and perspective.

The course covers tips and tricks on how to successfully paint a landscape.
Selecting appropriate photo references
Analysing examples of landscape painting in the work of different artists
Understanding the differences between different water-based paints (ink, watercolor, acrylic, water based oil paints)
Colour theory& mixing
Depicting depth and perspective
Blending technique

The art materials are to be discussed during the first session of the course when the tutor will cover the topic, but you will need:

Resources required by attendees

30 x 40 cm stretched canvas/ canvas board, acrylic paper/sketch pad, acrylic paint* (Cadmium Red, Alizarin Crimson, Magenta, Cadmium Yellow, Lemon Yellow, Cobalt Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Umber, Titanium White acrylic paint), white acrylic gesso, palette, glycerin, spray bottle, a range of synthetic paint brushes, graphite pencils, metal palette knife, silicone spatula, baby wipes, cotton rags.

This course is programmed as part of the Miner2Major Landscape Partnership scheme, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
