About this course

Come and learn about how a group of determined women changed the politics of a country. On this course you will gain an insight into the British suffragette movement and become familiar with key women’s rights activists, suffragettes, and suffragette groups. You will also find out about their tactics, how they moved to become more militant, and how they were treated as a result.

During the course, we will:

- assess and discuss the origins of the women’s suffrage movement and why early attempts to extend the franchise failed.

- Discover and discuss the lead up to militancy in the movement

- Look at the politics of why the women were treated the way they were

- Evaluate and discuss why (some) women received the vote in 1918, comparing different arguments and assessing key documents.

- Look at the activities of local women, and the movement in Nottinghamshire

- Reflect upon and discuss the role of protest in effecting political change and how Suffragette militancy and the government’s response at the beginning of the 20th century would be classified today.
