About this course

Ancient trees are so interesting! Many of us know our oaks from our beeches, and we also love to see old trees full of character. This course aims to encourage an understanding of what trees do when they become veteran and ancient, so that when you see them, you can 'read' what's going on, and have a depth of appreciation about what you're seeing. 

This is course is for learners who Ideally already have a good knowledge of trees and tree ID. It  would also be suitable for those who have taken the 'All About Trees' course. 

This course aims to give a introductory understanding of veteran and ancient trees. It will take our knowledge of trees beyond the tree ID book, to look at what happens when trees age and enter their later phases of life. What happens then is fascinating, as so much happens in the tree's life. Some of the things we'll look at include the behaviour of veteran and ancient trees, the habitats associated with them and the common types of fungi you're likely to see. We'll also look at different species of trees in their aging process.

We'll spend five sessions indoors, building a solid understanding, and one session (week 5) outdoors, observing, discussing  and getting hands-on with veteran and ancient trees. 

Doing this course will give you: 

• A confident understanding of the aging process of trees as they enter into the veteran and ancient stages of their life.
• Knowledge of the fungi commonly associated with veteran and ancient trees.
• Ability to identify habitats as key features of veteran and ancient trees.
• Ability to communicate with confidence about these trees, and work with others to discuss observations and insights.
• An understanding of the organizations who  are linked with ancient trees, how and where to find out more, and ways to get involved.

The course involves an outdoor walk which could  be over rough terrain,  so may not be suitable for anyone with mobility issues.

This course is programmed as part of the Miner2Major Landscape Partnership scheme, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

To book and enrol on one of our courses, you must have been living in England and have been resident in the UK for the past 3 years.
