About this course

Poetry for Women will look in depth at the lives and work of women poets, past and present. Learners will work mainly as a group to identify and discuss themes in the poetry which resonate with their lives today. This is not a creative writing course but if learners are keen, we may do some writing as a way of understanding style and form. This course is suitable for learners who have not read much poetry before as well as those for whom poetry is part of their lives.

What will learners achieve by the end of the course?

Have gained knowledge and awareness of a variety of women poets and their cultural and historical contexts
Will have developed their group skills.
Developed confidence and awareness of how to discover and enjoy poetry
Will have learned approaches to criticism
Will have gained tools for analysis of an individual poem
Will have gained knowledge and awareness of a variety of poetic forms, styles and techniques.
Will gain in understanding of how the ways women are perceived and treated (prejudice, sexism, laws and cultural norms) affect women’s writing.
