About this course

This illustrated talk will walk you through the series of water mills that once operated along the modest River Maun. The beauty of water power is that once it has been used to turn a wheel, it can be used again and again. Consequently, a dozen or more water mills, along the Maun or its tributaries, once operated within a very short distance of each other, . From a modest “Kings” mill mentioned in the Domesday book, Mansfield became a “Power House” of mills producing cotton products, enabling the town to achieve great prosperity, but not without its troubles. Many of those mills and their water courses still survive but others sadly disappeared even before the advent of the camera; however, there will be 230 years’ worth of paintings and photographs to be viewed as we look at the water mills of Mansfield.

This talk takes place in the Meeting Place on floor 2 of Mansfield Central Library.  A lift is available. Please arrive in time for a prompt 2pm start.

To book and enrol on one of our courses, you must have been living in England and have been resident in the UK for the past 3 years.

Some exceptions may apply if you are living in England with evidence of the right to remain and are from an EEU/EEAU country (completion of a questionnaire will be required).
