In this session, we will look at the different ingredients in chocolate and find out why they are so important for the taste or texture of your chocolate bar. There will be five practical activities to take part in or watch, and you will get to taste and rate some chocolate at the end. Ruth focuses on food structure and function in her work, whereas Margaret is interested in the flavour and a person’s enjoyment of the finished food. Together they will explore with you how the ingredients interact together to give your delicious chocolate bar and what would happen if you removed or changed any of the ingredients.

The products available to consume contain milk and soya so are not suitable for people with allergies to these products. They are also not suitable for customers with an allergy to nuts, wheat, rye, barley or oat due to manufacturing methods. We cannot guarantee an allergen-free environment as foods with allergens not listed above are also prepared in the same kitchen for other projects (e.g., eggs, fish, peanuts, nuts, mustard, sesame, lupin, celeriac, sulphur dioxide, crustaceans, molluscs). A full list of ingredients and the original packaging will be available for participants to review.

There are two workshops, 2-3pm and 4-5pm, and booking is essential.

Please book tickets for all people attending the workshop, both children and accompanying adults. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

About the Festival of Science and Curiosity

An annual festival which takes Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths out of the lab and into our everyday lives. The festival is about inviting the people of Nottinghamshire to share not only what they know, but also what they would like to know; it’s about celebrating curiosity, asking questions and taking a leading role in finding out the answers.

The festival is produced by local education charity Ignite!, in collaboration with a wide range of partners across Nottinghamshire. Every February they create opportunities for local people to engage with science and research and express their curiosity.
