About this course

In the Art for Improvers course we will be exploring different ways of creating drawn and painted images. Some experience of drawing and painting is useful, but not essential. Each week will have a different focus exploring the formal elements of line, texture, tone, colour and pattern through a range of different drawing and painting techniques, developed from observation. You will also have the chance to experiment with a range of media (including pencils, inks, soft pastels, acrylic paints and gouache).

You will learn about different drawing techniques and how to use formal elements and media effectively through looking at and discussing other artists work and by demonstrations, personal experimentation and individual tuition.

By the end of the course everyone will have explored and gained confidence and extended their knowledge and experience of some essential drawing and painting techniques, produced effective developmental images and gained skills for future art and design work.

What will be covered on the course?

Looking at and discussing how other artists have used line, texture, tone, colour and pattern to produce creative imagery.
Using inks to describe shape and explore different qualities of line.
Using pencils and markmaking to describe surface and texture.
Using charcoal to describe form, space and contrast through tone.
Using soft pastels and acrylic paint to explore colour, shape, space and contrast.
Using gouache paint to explore colour, shape and pattern.
Becoming confident with different drawing and painting techniques and learning the correct terminology.

What will learners achieve by the end of the course?

The skills to use drawing and painting media effectively.
A facility for using line, tone, texture, colour and pattern to describe and record objects in their environment.
Knowledge and understanding of the different ways historic and contemporary artists use line, tone and colour to communicate ideas and meaning.
Confidence in their own creative skills and ability.
What skills or knowledge do learners already need to have to attend the course?
Some understanding of drawing and painting would be helpful, but not essential as all learners will be taught based on their own experience.

A3 white cartridge paper pad (good quality not recycled paper)
Charcoal
Stick of compressed charcoal
