About this course

Art Next Steps is an introduction to different ways of creating drawn and painted images. Some experience of drawing and painting is useful, but not essential. We will be exploring line, tone and colour through a range of different drawing and painting techniques, focusing on producing images from observation.  

You will learn about different drawing techniques and how to use, line, tone and colour creatively through looking at and discussing other artists work and by demonstrations, personal experimentation and individual tuition.   

By the end of the course everyone will have explored and gained confidence with some essential drawing and painting techniques, produced finished images and gained skills for future art and design work. 

Some understanding of drawing and painting would be helpful, but not essential as all learners will be taught based on their own experience. 

What will be covered on the course?  

• Looking at and discussing how other artists have used line, tone and colour to produce creative imagery.   
• Using line drawing to describe shape, pattern and texture. 
• Using tone to describe form, space and contrast. 
• Using colour to explore shape, space and contrast. 
• Using line, tone and colour to produce finished creative work. 
• Becoming confident with different drawing and painting techniques and learning the correct terminology.  

What will learners achieve by the end of the course?  

• The skills to use drawing and painting media effectively. 
• A facility for using line, tone and colour to describe and record objects in their environment.  
• Knowledge and understanding of the different ways historic and contemporary artists use line, tone and colour to communicate ideas and meaning. 
• Confidence in their own creative skills and ability. 

Resources Required:

• Apron or big shirt 
• Range of pencils B-5B  
• Rubber 
• Pencil sharpener 
• Palette 
• Acrylic paint set 
• Range of synthetic paint brushes 
• A3 white cartridge paper pad (not recycled paper) 
• Charcoal 
• Stick of compressed charcoal 
• White chalk 
• Water pot 
• All of the equipment and materials can be bought from Wilkos, WH Smith, Hobbycraft, The Range or Amazon.

To book and enrol on one of our courses, you must have been living in England and have been resident in the UK for the past 3 years.

Some exceptions may apply if you are living in England with evidence of the right to remain and are from an EEU/EEAU country (completion of a questionnaire will be required).
