What are the aims of the course?
• to provide learners with an introduction to bookkeeping practices and to process source documents that underpin accurate record keeping;
• to meet the needs of learners who work, or want to work, in a job role eg Accounts Trainee or Finance Clerk;
• allow learners to learn, develop and practice basic bookkeeping skills required for employment and/or career progression in the accounting sector;
• contribute to the knowledge and understanding towards the related Level 2 NVQ in Accounting, to City & Guilds Level 1 Award in Bookkeeping and Accounts, to City & Guilds Computerised Accounting and to AAT Foundation Level.
Course content does not include Self-Assessment Tax Return.
Learners will gain understanding of how to check and process documents involved in financial record keeping, develop skills to carry out routine book-keeping processes and develop underpinning knowledge of book-keeping principles.
• Documentation: Complete and check the following documentation: invoices, statements, credit notes. Check Invoices and credit notes calculating VAT, discount and prices.
• Day Books: Enter invoices and credit notes into the appropriate daybook (sales, purchases, returns) Transfer totals to respective ledgers.
• Petty Cash: Using the imprest system enter the opening balance and analyse petty cash vouchers to appropriate columns, balance and cross tally
• Balance Sheet: Summarise use of the balance sheet
• Post transactions from source documentation to relevant ledgers
• Initial trial balance: balance ledger accounts and bring down the balances to the following accounting period.
What skills or knowledge do learners already need to have to attend the course?
Learners will need access to a basic calculator, ruler. Although handouts and financial documentation will be provided, a pen and paper to make notes will be useful.
One hour of (optional) self-study time will be beneficial to the learner in addition to weekly attendance to the course.
