About this course

Following on from our course Bookkeeping for Beginners this next steps course offers a further 

selection of basic bookkeeping topics at beginner level, with aims to:

  • provide learners with an introduction to bookkeeping practices and to process source documents that underpin accurate record keeping;
  • meet the needs of learners who work or want to work in a job role eg Accounts Trainee or Finance Clerk;
  • allow learners to learn, develop and practice basic bookkeeping skills required for employment and/or career progression in the accounting sector;
  • contribute to the knowledge and understanding towards the related AAT Foundation Level 2, Level 2 NVQ in Accounting and to City & Guilds Level 1 Award in Bookkeeping and Accounts.

Course topics include maintaining a cash book using double entry bookkeeping, 

bank reconciliation, posting from source documents to balance off ledger 

accounts (sales, purchases and general ledger) and extracting a trial balance, 

preparing a balance sheet


Learners will need access to a basic calculator and an email address. Although 

handouts and financial documentation will be provided, a pen and paper or

other suitable device to make notes will be useful. 

One hour of self-study time will be beneficial to the learner in addition to weekly 

attendance to the course.

To book and enrol on one of our courses, you must have been living in England and have been resident in the UK for the past 3 years.

Some exceptions may apply if you are living in England with evidence of the right to remain and are from an EEU/EEAU country (completion of a questionnaire will be required).
