Step into the festive season and discover the beautiful tradition of Christmas-themed bobbin lace making. Over this creative and relaxing course, YOU will learn how to craft delicate lace inspired by winter motifs. You will develop practical skills using bobbins and patterns while creating your own seasonal lace decorations and gifts. Along the way, you’ll build confidence, improve dexterity, and enjoy a mindful, calming craft that connects heritage techniques with festive creativity. This course is suitable for beginners as well as those with some experience—just let your tutor know your level and your Christmas crafting goals.
This welcoming and practical course introduces learners to the traditional craft of bobbin lace making, with a festive twist. Focusing on the accessible and versatile Tape/Braid lace and Torchon Bobbin Lace techniques, learners will create seasonal lace pieces inspired by Christmas, such as tree decorations, gift embellishments, or winter-themed motifs.
Designed for complete beginners as well as those with prior experience, the course builds skills step-by-step while allowing for individual progression and creativity.
Over the duration of the course, learners will:
Explore the history and heritage of bobbin lace, including its use in decorative textiles and festive traditions
Learn the two fundamental movements of bobbin lace – the cross and the twist
Combine these techniques to create a variety of seasonal stitch patterns and textures
Develop confidence in:
Handling bobbins and managing multiple threads
Reading and following a simple lace pattern (pricking)
Maintaining even tension and spacing
Accurate pin placement to shape festive designs
Festive Creative Focus
Throughout the course, learners will apply their new skills to create Christmas-themed lace samples, which may include:
Snowflakes
Stars
Tree decorations
Decorative trims for cards, gifts, or home décor
No prior experience is required—beginners are very welcome
Learners with some existing knowledge can build on their skills and work on more detailed or personalised designs
The course encourages mindfulness, creativity, and relaxation, making it an ideal seasonal activity
By the end of the course, YOU will have a selection of beautiful handmade lace pieces and the confidence to continue exploring this timeless craft.

To book and join one of our courses, you must live in England permanently and either:

You cannot enrol if you live in these devolved areas:

Residency Requirements (Additional Information)
If you live in the UK on a visa, we’ll need evidence of your visa to confirm funding. You can upload this when applying, and you’ll need to complete a short questionnaire.
Some exceptions include:
Your visa must last until after your course ends.
Asylum seekers must have lived in the UK for at least 6 months while their claim is being processed.
You are supported by your local authority under Section 23C or 23CA of the Children Act 1989, or under the Care Act 2014.
Anyone who does not meet the funding criteria would need to pay full course fees.
