Creative Textiles: Next Steps is for learners who have already completed the Creative Textiles Beginners course or already have experience in textile techniques. We will explore how fabric, fibre crafts and embellishments can be combined to create a final piece of your choosing.
You will explore colour, texture, stitch, fabric, fibre and embellishment, beginning with a small textile tile to introduce or refresh key techniques before planning your own piece.
During the course, you will develop ideas through samples, materials and simple design planning. You may choose to create a small wall hanging, textile panel, decorative hoop, stitched collage, mounted sample or another textile piece.
The focus will be on experimenting, expanding your existing textiles skills and confidently making creative choices.
What will learners achieve by the end of the course?
Create a small textile sampler combining at least two techniques, such as stitch, layering, embellishment, knotting or weaving.
Select a theme, colour palette or starting point for a personal textile project.
Plan a manageable textile piece by choosing suitable materials, techniques and presentation methods.
Develop a personal textile project using fabric, fibre, thread and/or embellishments.
Make creative decisions and solve practical problems while developing your textile work.
Share your finished or developing piece with others and identify at least one strength and one next step.
What to bring to the course:
Selection of fabric – these can be small scraps and offcuts
Yarns or macrame cords
Any embellishments you have such as embroidery threads, ribbons beads or buttons
Needle and thread
Scissors
Feel free to bring and use whatever you already have, as well as recycling packaging and looking in charity shops (the £1 sale rail and broken jewellery section can be treasure troves!)
