About this course

This course is for people looking for some focused help to write poems. It will also remove barriers about writing a poem. It will include using visual prompts, forms of existing poems and discussion to help generate your poems and develop your drafts plus the motivation of a supportive group who will give feedback on your work when we meet up again.  


We will look at   

  • Using poems and images as prompts   
  • Working on a poem – writing your first draft   
  • Working on a poem – development after the first draft  
  • Starting to edit a poem   
  • Developing a developmental feedback approach to your own and others’ work   
  • To understand more about rhyme, rhythm , metre and the structure of a poem 
  • Provide and accept constructive feedback 

What will learners achieve by the end of the course?  

  • To enable learners to feel confident about writing a poem  
  • To equip learners with tools, resources and techniques for writing poetry  
  • To learn from the work of published poets  
  • To remove the barriers to getting started on writing poetry 
  • Write at least one poem  
  • Know more about the work of a range of poets

To book and enrol on one of our courses, you must have been living in England and have been resident in the UK for the past 3 years.


Some exceptions may apply if you are living in England with evidence of the right to remain and are from an EEU/EEAU country (completion of a questionnaire will be required).
