About this course

This course aims to teach beginner English skills to people who speak English as a second language. This course is designed for speakers of other languages who want to improve their English and gain an ESOL Entry level 1-3 Speaking and Listening qualification. Our experienced staff will help you to improve your reading, writing and speaking and listening. You will gain confidence in these skills and will then focus on developing your reading, comprehension and understating skills further in order to then pass a qualification.

You will start by doing an initial assessment, in order to decide with your tutor which level you will be working at from Entry level 1 -3 . You will be assessed near the end of the course on and once you have successfully completed this you will receive a City and Guilds ESOL Speaking and Listening qualification. Please make sure that you can attend the lessons each week before enrolling on the course.

What you will need to bring to the course:

You will require access to a laptop or PC with internet access on which group Teams classes will be delivered by your tutor. All resources that you need will be supplied by the tutor, but you may wish to have your own notebook to work in as well.

We provide our ESOL courses free of charge for learners who are eligible to study with us. To check your eligibility, we need some information from you, including your age, where you live, how long you have lived in England, and your residency status. If you receive benefits or have a low income, we may also ask for evidence of this. This helps us apply for funding to support your learning.

Living in England

To book and join one of our courses, you must live in England permanently and either:

Live inside the East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA) area (Nottinghamshire or Derbyshire)

Live outside the devolved areas listed below

You cannot enrol if you live in these devolved areas:

South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority
Tees Valley Combined Authority
West Midlands Combined Authority

Residency Requirements (Additional Information)

If you live in the UK on a visa, we’ll need evidence of your visa to confirm funding. You can upload this when applying, and you’ll need to complete a short questionnaire.

Some exceptions include:

Your visa must last until after your course ends.
Asylum seekers must have lived in the UK for at least 6 months while their claim is being processed.
You are supported by your local authority under Section 23C or 23CA of the Children Act 1989, or under the Care Act 2014.

Anyone who does not meet the funding criteria would need to pay full course fees.
