About this course

Suitable for people with existing knowledge and experience of colour mixing (colour theory), art material selection, surface preparation and painting principles, this course will explore the boundaries between representation and abstraction in the artwork of contemporary Nottinghamshire’ artists. During the course you are encouraged to explore acrylics as a medium, to understand different styles and to work in the style of your favourite artist. Working from photographs, tuition is provided through a mixture of demonstrations and exercises according to your needs, as well as informal group critiques and discussions, all helping to increase your knowledge and enjoyment of acrylic painting.

On this course you will learn how to manipulate the acrylic paint by using different techniques to create a contemporary painting. You will know how to work in a spontaneous manner often using large brushes to make sweeping gestural marks and different painting techniques like dripping, scumbling or pouring. You will be supported by your tutor to gain skills in:

  • Artist research
  • Working out innovative, dynamic compositions
  • Using a bright, colourful palette, with an expressive application of paint and responsive mark making
  • Painting techniques: collage, impasto, scumbling, sgrafitto and blending

The following resources will be required: 30 x 40 cm Stretched canvas/ Canvas board, acrylic paper/sketch pad, Cadmium Red, Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Yellow, Lemon Yellow, Cobalt Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Umber, and Titanium White acrylic paint, white acrylic  gesso, palette, glycerin, spray bottle, a range of synthetic paint brushes, graphite pencils,  metal palette knife, silicone spatula, baby wipes, cotton rags.
