About this course

Do you want to grow your own flowers and vegetables, while helping to create an inspiring community growing space?

Would you like to learn how to plan and grow successfully? If so, this course for you!

This course aims to help you take part in creating a community raised bed garden. You will then learn a wide range of skills to volunteer in this community space or simply to improve your own garden.

You will be able to draw a simple plan, calculate and fill the raised bed with the correct ratio of compost to soil, and then read a planting table, cost out materials, measure planting distances, and finally give correct ongoing care to plants. The course takes place partly in the library and continues in a practical sense to create the community garden. The aims include the practical steps of planning, measuring, costing, planting and plant care, and focus on the measurements and calculations required in these skills.

What will learners achieve by the end of the course?

You will be able to;-

- draw a simple plan to scale

- calculate and fill a raised planting bed with correct ratio of plants

- read a planting table and understand correct dates to plant

- budget and total the cost of seeds and plants

- analyse and measure distances required and plant accurately

- calculate correct water for care and maintenance.

This course is for people who don’t already have a level 2 qualification in maths (GCSE C/4 or above) or are not confident in using maths at this level. You maybe asked to complete an initial assessment to determined your maths level.

Resources required:

Pen and paper, and if you have them, gardening gloves.
