The course is an introduction to Human Biology to include the following topic areas: Cell Biology, Human nutrition, Human reproduction and genetics, Human respiratory systems and diseases and The Human cardiovascular system and diseases.
If you are interested in knowing more about how the Human Body works, This course offers the necessary information and knowledge to gain an understanding in what makes an efficient human body and gives examples of what and how things can go wrong in some organ systems.
Cell Biology: the basic structure of cells as the unit of life, the structural differences between simple cells (prokaryotic cells) and more complex cells (eukaryotic cells) the structure of human and plant cells, the role of the structures in the cell, cell specialization – adaptation to function.
Human Nutrition: nutrients – macro & micronutrients, roles and daily requirements. Balanced diet, importance of iron, calcium, Vitamin C & D and deficiency diseases. Human digestive system, digestion and absorption of the products of digestion.
Human reproduction and genetics: Female and male reproductive systems (structure and function), menstrual cycle and the roles of the hormones controlling the menstrual cycle, fertilization, implantation and pregnancy. Inheritance in humans, structure of DNA, production of gametes (meiosis), Mendelian inheritance, genetic diseases.
Human respiratory systems and diseases: the structure of the human respiratory system, ventilation, gas exchange, smoking and its effects on the respiratory system to include bronchitis, COPD (chronic bronchitis and emphysema) and lung cancer.
The Human cardiovascular system and diseases: the structure of the cardiovascular system, the structure and function of blood vessels, the structure of the heart, cardiac cycle, coronary heart disease – features and risk factors, effect of smoking on the cardiovascular system.
GCSE Biology books would be useful for background knowledge and to help develop an understanding as the course progresses.
As this course is online, a suitable device such as laptop, smart phone, tablet or computer will be required to access the course. Zoom will be used for the live sessions and the link will be sent to you once your enrolment has been completed.
