About this course

About this course

This course is for anyone that loves pattern building and colour.  Over the course you will gain the confidence to create prints with traditional carved blocks from Indian.  We will look at the history of Indian Print Blocking and how Printing and Block making is done today.

  • Learners are required to provide their own substance to print onto this can be paper, or thin card or fabric such as tote bags or pillowcases.

Within the course, you will gain an insight to the history of block printing in India and how the industry is surviving today.  We will analyse patterns and look at the Pattern Theory – how it is an underlying structure in culture and the environment around us.  We will recreate patterns by repeating units; symmetry, rotation, reflection, tiling of shapes.  Also looking at layering of designs over each other and reviewing a selection of artists and use of pattern; we also discuss how patterns are found in nature.  We will look at Colour Theory – looking at a colour wheel and see how colours can blend and complement each other.  We will also build up an understanding of how colours can change a design mood.  From discussion over the course, individuals will gain an understanding of the pros and cons of different paints on the market and investigate methods of using waste paint.
