About this course

Journals and creative planners have been gaining momentum in the crafting community recently. There are several types of journaling and planning and there’s something for everyone if you’re interested in starting. In this course we look at making journals, and booklets; these are an introduction to some book binding skills. These can be made from “junk” - Scraps of paper, fabric, or embellishments from past projects all these can be used and incorporated into a junk journal. Or from specific papers for style and use of your journal.

The sky’s the limit! For this 3-week introduction to journal making weather, you want to make ‘Creative Journal’, ‘Travel Notebooks,’ ‘Bullet Journals,’ ‘Fabric books’ or ‘Planners’.

Within this course we also touch the world of altered books; and how you can upcycle old books to create memory books and art journals.

What will be covered on the course?

Within the course learners will gain an understanding of;

Introduction book binding and some of the terminology used

Learners will create some Journal layouts,
Look at the need to give items second life; and benefits of crafting with reclaim items, this link to Junk Journal course
Develop Paper crafting skills and have understanding of difference glue and how to use the right one for the right project
Be able to demonstrate the correct amount of thread required for binding
Develop & hand eye coordination and improve fine motor skills – dexterity, from creating folds

What will learners achieve by the end of the course?

Create folded book(s) from one sheet of paper
Able to make signatures for journal
Able to make Pamphlet soft cover book
Be able to demonstrate the correct amount of thread required for binding
Name some elements in Journals
Demonstrate safe use of equipment including craft knives & awl

Session one

Basic Tool Kit – all-purpose scissors, glue
Paper – these can Copier paper or what you want to make your Journal with
Large Sheet of paper – alternative large sheets of paper such as old maps or newspaper, or wallpaper

Session Two and Three

As session one
Breakfast Cereal box cardboard and liner (Non-stick sheet)
Ephemera
Hardback book
Darning Needle
Alternative you make these with fabric – samples to see in session one
