Learn the basics of 3D needle felting and create objects using wool roving and a special felting needle.
You will learn how to create basic shapes using the needle felting technique, before moving on to making simple animals and birds. You’ll learn how to create simple 3D needle-felted shapes using basic tools and techniques. You’ll start by learning how to use felting needles, wool roving, and foam pads safely and effectively. You’ll practise making basic shapes like spheres and cylinders, then combine them to create a small 3D animal, before going on to creating a needle felted bird!
What will learners achieve by the end of the course? Identify and correctly use felting needle, wool and foam pad Show proper needle felting safety techniques each week Demonstrate the ability to create a smooth and evenly felted ball Attach a felted head securely onto a basic animal body Create and attach ears and a tail to a basic felted object/animal body Apply different colours of felt to simulate feathers Demonstrate fine control of felting needle to felt details such as beaks and eyes
What you will need to bring to the course:
Needle Felting Wool in a variety of colours
Needle Felting Needles – these come in different sizes: look for size 38 or a medium.
Foam, dense sponge or felting brush to felt onto. An offcut of blue upholstery foam about 15cm square and 5cm thick (6 inches square and 2.5 inches thick) is ideal.
If you struggle with grip or dexterity in your hands, a felting needle holder (for single or 3 needles) can be helpful.
Small black beads to use as eyes (optional)

Local Markets often have stalls selling blue upholstery foam.

To book and enrol on one of our courses, you must be living in England permanently and live outside of the devolved areas listed below or live within the East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA) devolved area (Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire).

Residency Eligibility – other criteria
If you are living in the UK on a visa we will require evidence of this in order to be funded for the course, you can upload this evidence when you apply for the course. (completion of a questionnaire will be required).
Some exceptions may apply for example
Your visa expiry date must be beyond the end of your course
Asylum seekers must have lived in the UK for 6 months or longer while their claim is being considered by the Home Office
You are receiving local authority support under section 23C or section 23CA of the Children Act 1989 or the Care Act 2014
Any learner who is not funded full cost fees would apply to these courses.
