This five-session course aims to open the door to writing your own poems. We will use a range of prompts, pictures and poems to get you started. So if you have always wanted to try writing poems but have been put off by thinking it’s too hard or that it always has to be about ‘big ideas’ come along and give Poetry for Beginners a try.
Over the duration of the course, we will look at:
- Getting the creative process started using images and existing poems
- Mining your memories and using your five senses to kickstart poems
- Why modern poems come in all shapes and sizes and don’t need to rhyme.
- Recognising the clues about a poem from the way it looks – poetic form
- Drafting and writing a number of poems
- Sharing your work with the group and listening to others’ poems
- How to give helpful feedback on others’ poems and use feedback to develop your work
You will need a notebook and a pen to participate on this course.
