About this course

First Steps into English/Maths/IT

Our First Steps courses are for adults who want to learn basic English, maths, and computer skills. It is perfect for people who need extra support with learning, reading, writing, or maths. It is intended for adults with additional learning needs, learning difficulties and/or low-level literacy, numeracy and IT skills.

You will learn in a small, friendly group. There are no tests or exams.

About this course:

This course is a gentle introduction to maths skills for adults with additional learning needs.

You will learn through simple, practical activities designed to build confidence and independence in everyday life. The course includes number skills that you will use in everyday life, all taught in a supportive and friendly environment.

Activities are hands-on and easy to follow, helping you develop skills at your own pace.

This course is ideal for learners who want to improve everyday skills for home, community, or supported work settings.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

• Count, addand subtractsimple everyday numbers at your own pace.

• Use moneyto practice buying things and checking change.

• Tell the timeto help with your daily routines at home and in the town.

What you can do next

After this course, you can join another "First Steps" course to also improve your English or computer skills.

What you will need to bring to the course:

You may wish to bring a notebook and pen.
All other materials and computers will be provided.

Living in England

To book and join one of our courses, you must live in England permanently and either:

• Live outside the devolved areas listed below, or

• Live inside the East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA) area (Nottinghamshire or Derbyshire).

You cannot enrol if you live in these devolved areas:

•    Lancashire Combined County Authority
•    Buckinghamshire

•    Warwickshire

•    Surrey

Residency Requirements (Additional Information)

If you live in the UK on a visa, we’ll need evidence of your visa to confirm funding. You can upload this when applying, and you’ll need to complete a short questionnaire.

Some exceptions include:

• Your visa must last until after your course ends.

• Asylum seekers must have lived in the UK for at least 6 months while their claim is being processed.

• You are supported by your local authority under Section 23C or 23CA of the Children Act 1989, or under the Care Act 2014.

Anyone who does not meet the funding criteria would need to pay full course fees.
