Would you like to try your hand at silk painting? In this two-week course for beginners, you will be taught the basics of this textile art. No prior knowledge is required, but an interest in art, drawing and painting is recommended.
By the end of the course learners will have explored and gained confidence in silk painting techniques and will have produced a piece of artwork that can be framed or made into a cushion cover. Skills and topics that we will cover include:
• prepare the silk
• prepare and transfer a design to silk
• use a water-based resist
• apply silk paints correctly
• use different painting techniques (wet-on-wet, salt application, etc.)
• heat set the design
Learners should bring:
• apron
• a soft pencil (B)
• a4 sketch paper
• small brushes – watercolour brushes work well (you will need a variety of fine to medium sized, round tipped)
• paper towel
• palette
• silk paints
• water pot water-based resist (gutta). This sometimes comes in a tube which has an applicator nozzle. If purchasing a small jar or bottle of gutta then you will also need a small applicator bottle with a fine nozzle. Please note that you can use any colour Gutta – black, silver, gold or clear.
