About this course

Do you want to grow your own flowers and vegetables, while helping to create an inspiring community growing space? 

Would you like to learn how to plan and grow successfully? If so, this course is for you! 


This course aims to help you plan or improve your garden, as well as take part in creating a community growing space in a poly tunnel and garden. 


You will be able to:-

  • draw a simple plan of a garden
  • understand correct ratios of materials for making natural compost 
  • read a planting table
  • cost out materials
  • measure planting distances
  • give correct ongoing care to plants. 

The course takes place partly in the garden of the church and partly inside the poly tunnel. The aims include the practical steps of planning, measuring, costing, planting and plant care, and focus on the measurements and calculations required in these skills. 


What will learners achieve by the end of the course? 

You will be able to:- 


Measure a plot and draw a simple plan to scale. 

Calculate correct ratio of materials required to create compost. 

Identify ideal spots for sun or shade-loving plants. 

Read a planting table and understand correct dates to plant. 

Budget and total the cost of seeds and plants. 

Analyse and measure planting distances required and plant accurately. 

Measure correct water for care and maintenance. 


What skills or knowledge do learners already need to have to attend the course?  

None this is for beginners. 


This course is for people who don’t already have a level 2 qualification in maths (GCSE C/4 or above) or are not confident in using maths at this level.   


Will the learner receive anything for free for attending?  

None
