About this course

Would you like to begin painting but don’t know where to start? 


During this beginners course, you will create simple paintings in watercolour. Through practice, you will improve your painting technique by using simple maths principles, such as balance, proportion and perspective to improve your work


You will be able to use simple watercolour techniques, proportion and create perspective in painting your subjects.


Session 1: Mix paint in the correct proportions to experiment with watercolour techniques, and practice with different brush shapes.


Session 2: Draw a simple landscape using thirds to divide the picture and use angles to create single point perspective.


Session 3: Draft out a simple image by using squaring method to transfer it.


By the end of the course, you will have:

• experimented with 6 watercolour techniques on a tester sheet

• measured thirds and angles to create a simple yet pleasing landscapes in watercolour

• chosen a favourite image and reproduced it as a simple watercolour.


What skills or knowledge do learners already need to have to attend the course?

None just an interest in painting.


This course is for adults aged 19+ who don’t have a level 2 (or equivalent) qualification in Maths e.g. GCSE grade C/4 or above. If you do but are not confident in using Maths at that level and would like a refresher you are welcome to enrol.


You will be able to create your own artwork to take away and display.

To book and enrol on one of our courses, you must have been living in England and have been resident in the UK for the past 3 years.

Some exceptions may apply if you are living in England with evidence of the right to remain and are from an EEU/EEAU country (completion of a questionnaire will be required).
