About this course

The aim of this course is to provide learners with an introduction to bookkeeping practices and to process source documents that underpin accurate record keeping.  It is ideal for those who are working in or are looking to gain employment in a job role such as Accounts Trainee or Finance Clerk.  You will develop and practice basic bookkeeping skills required for employment and/or career progression in the accounting sector.  You will gain knowledge and an understanding of the related AAT Foundation Level 2, Level 2 NVQ in Accounting and the City & Guilds Level 1 Award in Bookkeeping and Accounts.

At the end of this course learners will be able to:

- Documentation: Complete and check the following documentation: invoices; statements; credit notes.  Check invoices and credit notes calculating: VAT; discount, and prices.

- Day books: Enter invoices and credit notes into the appropriate daybook: sales daybook; purchases daybook; sales returns daybook; purchases returns daybook.

- Transfer the total(s) of a variety of source documents to the respective ledger account(s) and balance off ledger accounts;

- Extract a trial balance from ledger accounts;

- Petty Cash: Using the imprest system, enter the opening balance and analyse petty cash vouchers to appropriate analysis columns, balance and cross tally, and restore the imprest amount.

You will need access to a basic calculator and an email address.  Although handouts and financial documentation will be provided, a pen and paper or other suitable device to make notes will be useful.

One hour of self-study time will be beneficial to the learner in addition to weekly attendance on the course.
