About this course

Come and explore how to paint using colourful and vibrant gouache paints.  In this course, you will learn all about the basics of gouache paints and learn how to use this versatile water-based medium. 


By the end of the course learners will have explored and gained confidence in gouache painting techniques and will have produced some effective bright and vibrant images.  

We will cover:  

  • consistency and layering: how to mix and use gouache paints, plus tips for using paper and brushes effectively 
  • colour theory and colour mixing with gouache 
  • techniques for gouache, staining, layering, wet on wet, dry brush & reworking dry areas 
  • elements of composition 
  • shape, pattern and texture 

Learners should bring:

  • apron (or a large shirt) 
  • a pencil and a rubber 
  • a selection of different paintbrushes 
  • A4 sized mixed media paper or watercolour paper 140lbs/300gsm (The Works, The Range, Wilko, Hobbycraft, Amazon) 
  • A set of gouache paints in tubes (The Works, The Range, Hobbycraft, Amazon) 
  • water pots x2 
  • a palette  
  • wet wipes 
  • paper towel 
  • masking tape

To book and enrol on one of our courses, you must have been living in England and have been resident in the UK for the past 3 years.

Some exceptions may apply if you are living in England with evidence of the right to remain and are from an EEU/EEAU country (completion of a questionnaire will be required).
