About this course

Printmaking Drypoint Etching is an ideal technique to explore as a gateway to other forms of etching. It is essentially a way of drawing and markmaking onto metal to create linear and tonal images that when printed have a completely unique quality.

During the course you will work directly from visual source materials to develop a range of your own aluminum plates, experimenting with scribed lines, markmaking and how to use these to create tone. You will then learn to ink and print black and white images and explore the chine colle technique to add colour.

You will learn and explore these processes through looking at and discussing other printmakers work and by demonstrations, personal experimentation, and individual tuition on how to make and print your drypoint etchings.

By the end of the course everyone will have produced good quality, finished prints to mount and exhibit or to give as gifts.  The course will involve:

  • Looking at and discussing how other printmakers have created their work.
  • Using simple drawing techniques to create an initial design based on learners own images or photographs. (Those new to drawing can work from others imagery).
  • Using scribes and other tools to create linear and tonal markmaking to explore ideas.
  • Becoming familiar with the printmaking equipment and learning the correct terminology.
  • Using water washable etching inks to print drypoint etchings effectively onto printmaking paper.
  • Use the chine colle technique effectively to add colour to drypoint etching images.
  • Printing using a printing press.
