About this course

This beginner’s course is designed to teach a range of jewellery making skills, as well as design techniques, so that you can make a range of well-designed jewellery items.

At the end of the course, you will know and or be able to:

- Identify and safely handle tools and name some of the findings used in jewellery making – create a simple single stand bracelet using these.

- Design and create a single strand necklace building on techniques from Session 1 whilst safely using three different tools.

- Recognise and use different ear wires and headpins and safely cut and twist wire with round-nosed pliers to form a loop. Use this technique to create drop earrings.

- Adapt techniques used for making drop earrings to create a set of charms to add to a kilt pin brooch.

- Adapt techniques learnt to create a lariat necklace or necklace with extension piece and charm attachment.

- Upcycle old jewellery into new pieces. Create at least one item of jewellery using some beads or elements from old or recycled jewellery.

Resource required by attendees

  • Please bring a selection of beads (seed beads, rocailles, glass beads, ceramic beads) and jewellery findings (lobster claw clasps and soldered jump rinds, earring hooks, ear wires, crimp beads and small silver beads).
  • You will also need a jewellery making kit containing precision wire cutting pliers, small round-nosed pliers, small chain-nosed pliers and a crimping tool (supplies available on Amazon or eBay).
