About this course

What are the aims of the course?

To enjoy exploring the use of shape, space and measure in a fun, creative and stress-free way. We will use these skills to make clay models, origami, gift boxes and pop-up greetings cards.

During this course you will measure in different ways and convert between different units of measurement such as millimetres and centimetres. You will develop your understanding of 2d and 3d shapes including how to draw and make them. This might sound complicated but most of the time you’ll be so busy making something that you won’t even notice you are doing maths!

Upon the completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • measure accurately using centimetres and millimetres
  • name 2d and 3d shapes and explain some of their properties
  • spot lines of symmetry and different types of angles
  • create nets of simple 3d shapes.
  • use all this knowledge to create a range of different craft projects.

The learning outcomes for this course have been taken from the Functional Skills Maths curriculum, so if you enjoy this course you may want to think about progressing to a Functional Skills course and gaining a formal qualification.

Activities will be set at a level to suit your learning ability.

This course is for people who don’t already have a level 2 qualification in maths (GCSE C/4 or above) or are not confident in using maths at this level.
