About this course

Please note this course is Adult Only

If you want to find out what it takes to write a publishable short story, this course is for you. Our Short Stories Next Steps writing course will help you to create credible plots and structure your story as well as showing you how to present your work ready for publication.

One of the enjoyable things about short stories is the sheer variety of the markets for which you could be writing; women’s magazines, local newspapers, competitions and festivals, small press magazines. This course will show you how to research and meet the demands of these markets.  You will learn the disciplines of short story writing, hone your skills to ensure your short stories are structured and know what makes them work.

With a focus on developing your ideas into short stories, this course includes:

  • a variety of writing activities
  • creating credible plots
  • short story structure
  • research of potential markets
  • how to present your work for publication
  • giving feedback to other writers
  • receiving feedback from other writers.

Pen and paper or alternatively, a suitable device to write your short stories on

There are no set books for this course because a range of published texts will be provided but you may find the following of interest:

Margret Geraghty - More five-minute writing : another 50 inspiring exercises in creative writing in five minutes a day

We will also examine techniques used in published texts and use this to inspire new writing.

The class will be about encouragement and sharing.  There will be opportunities to give and receive feedback.

This is a next steps course following on from our Short Stories course.

This course is suitable for writers with skills or knowledge gained through the experience of writing at least one complete short story.  Published and non-published writers are welcome.
