The aim of this course is to enable art appreciation, where learners can enjoy and understand the cultural change in 2D and 3D art works, developing a critical approach to techniques, and the impact of society on art. Fostering critical debate about where we see art and its function in our changing society.

On this course we will look at:

  • Florence and the Renaissance: Florence was the center of trade and technology in the middle ages. Learners will discover the art of this period, with the influence of patrons, religion, humanism, changes in painting technology and perspective. Finally, learners will understand how these factors shaped the art world.

  • Artists adventures in Montmartre: Montmartre is a region of Paris, which features cafes, bistros, night life and art schools, where travelling artists lived the bohemian lifestyle, recalled events and considered philosophy. Learners can discover how this center became a melting pot for art ideas which impacted irretrievably, on the established art world.

  • How America shaped the art world: Modernism began in Europe and then America Focused this movement as the center of the art world. Learners will discover the influential factors behind the success of Modernist artists, and understand alternative views to our Eurocentric one.

This is an online course. A suitable electronic device such as a laptop, tablet or smartphone with internet access will be required. Learners will be required to download and use Zoom (free software).  You will need to access online resources that are supplied by the tutor.
