The aim of this course is to offer basic information and insights into autism causes and signs. We shall consider what the autism spectrum is and how living on the autism spectrum impacts on people’s lives; how autism is currently understood; and types and sources of support to improve wellbeing.

On this course we will cover:

  • What is autism? Learners will be able to describe key signs and symptoms of autism, including those of Asperger’s syndrome and Kanner syndrome
  • Models of autism: learners will be able to describe and understand how autism can be defined in different ways, and how these impact on the public view of people living with autism
  • Understanding the autism spectrum: learners will be able to identify the five elements of the autism spectrum, how each one can impact on a person’s life, and why the experience of autism varies so much from one person to another.
  • Sources of support: learners will be able to recognise and describe different forms of support including statutory and voluntary support, peer support and self help

You will require: Note-taking materials -either pen and notepad, voice recorder (learners are very welcome to record oral teaching as a reasonable adjustment but will be asked not to record personal disclosures)

This is an online course. A suitable electronic device such as a laptop, tablet or smartphone with internet access will be required. Learners will be required to download and use Zoom (free software).
