This course aims to bring together writers of all abilities to introduce the new writer to short story writing and for improver/experienced writers to refresh and hone their writing skills.  Throughout the course, advice and support will be provided about how to develop an idea and structure a short story. Learners can write for their own pleasure or with a view to submitting work for publication.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Utilise skills and knowledge achieved during this course to write short stories
  • Refresh and hone short story writing skills
  • Create several pieces of writing and/or either one short story, or several stories
  • Write either for their own pleasure or to a standard ready to submit for publication
  • Utilise a collection of their own ideas as well as those provided by published writers
  • Be proficient in receiving constructive feedback
  • Choose from a selection of methods to motivate themselves to keep writing after the course has finished.
Pen and paper will be required


This is an online course. A suitable electronic device such as a laptop, tablet or smartphone with internet access will be required. Learners will be required to download and use Zoom (free software).

To secure your place on the course BOTH the following must be done:

  • Complete the EVENTBRITE BOOKING.
  • Complete our INSPIRE ONLINE ENROLMENT FORM for each person attending the course.

To book and enrol on one of our courses, you must have been a resident in the UK for the past 3 years.

Some exceptions may apply if you are living in the UK with evidence of the right to remain and are from an EEU/EEAU country (completion of a questionnaire will be required).


As we no longer receive funding for our ESFA-funded courses for learners living in the devolved areas listed below, full cost fees would apply to these courses if you live in these areas: Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, Greater Manchester, Greater London, Liverpool City Region, Tees Valley, West Midlands and West of England.
